The Foundation BFPE for a Responsible Society expresses deep outrage and disappointment at the verdict of the Belarusian court, which sentenced 20 political analysts to long prison terms. These verdicts, based on charges of conspiracy and promoting extremism, represent another step in the state’s crackdown on independent thought and freedom of expression in Belarus.
Among those convicted are many prominent analysts, sociologists, and economists. These individuals have made significant contributions to independent media in Belarus and have fought for transparency and accountability in society. Their only crime is that they criticized the authoritarian regime and supported democratic processes. The sentenced include former students, experts, and the director of the School of Political Studies in Belarus, all dedicated to promoting human rights, democracy, and the rule of law in their country.
Sentences ranging from 10 to 11 years in prison, along with substantial fines, clearly demonstrate the authorities’ intent to intimidate and suppress any form of dissent. This act of repression further confirms the authoritarian nature of Alexander Lukashenko’s regime, which has embarked on a brutal crackdown on civil society and the opposition since the disputed 2020 elections.
The Foundation BFPE condemns these injustices and supports all political prisoners in Belarus. Solidarity and support are crucial in these difficult times, so that we can stand together in defense of human rights and democratic values.
We call on the Council of Europe and the European Union to take concerted action against such actions, as Europe cannot stand idly by while its values are trampled upon and those who defend them are convicted.
