The Assembly of the YUROM Center, after 27 years of existence and work dedicated to the emancipation of the Roma community, at its session held on April 5th, 2025, made the decision to award, for the first time, a recognition to sociologist and democracy advocate Sonja Licht for her outstanding contribution to the emancipation and promotion of Roma rights in Europe. Based on the received proposals and after a careful review of the submitted nominations, the Assembly of the YUROM Center reached a unanimous decision.
As the rationale behind granting this recognition, it was stated that Sonja Licht is a renowned sociologist and political activist involved in numerous human rights initiatives, particularly in the field of Roma rights and civil society. She is the president of the Foundation BFPE for a Responsible Society and has worked extensively with the Open Society Foundation in Serbia.
“Sonja Licht has been engaged for decades in promoting human rights, democracy, and social justice, including support for Roma. Her commitment to the NGO sector and initiatives for Roma inclusion, peace in the former Yugoslavia, Serbia, and the region, was a decisive factor for the members of the YUROM Center Assembly in awarding this recognition for the first time. Even today, through her personal engagement and work across various European forums, Sonja Licht continues to inspire young people with her ideas and consistency to dedicate themselves to the fight for democracy, the rights of minority peoples and communities, and social justice—demonstrating that solidarity, political culture, justice and fairness, equality and equity, as well as education, will always, and especially today, play a crucial role in preserving a progressive and modern society,” stated the YUROM Center at the end of the announcement, signed by Osman Balić, president of the association.
